Wed 31 Oct Borneo River Lodge to Homestay

Image
Roy woke at 3:40 and headed off for the sunrise trip, an hour's drive away. I walked to the canopy walk, seeing monkeys in the trees on the way. Part of the canopy walk is closed due to lightening damage, so you enter on the exit now. I made it to the first tree and decided I didn't trust the bridge!! Nervously walked down again. Pretty moth at the lodge I think I'll go look for orangutans now while I wait for Roy to return. Another beautiful moth Bloody leech! This fern makes your mouth go numb. Really strange feeling. Our driver was ready for us after lunch and we drove back to the office in Lahad Datu. We were lucky to see an old male elephant on the way (Roy had seen a whole herd on his trip back from sunrise view). Our homestay host, Maria and her husband were waiting for us, and we drove the nearly three hour trip in an old Mazda, arriving in the dark. Our room was simple, with a fan and dinner was soon ready, eaten on...

Good morning. We had a bird sleeping at our window last night. Couldn't see it but sounded busy like a chicken, talking away whene'er we moved. Was gone this morning. From our room  We have the red leaf monkeys in the trees this morning. The morning was spent walking to the platform on the top of the hill we can see from the lodge. A hot, sweaty walk through the jungle. The platform, zoomed in from yesterday's picture Our lodge from the platform Leech! We saw millipedes, a big green lizzard, fire ants, a hammerhead worm,  mushrooms and a waterfall. One of the millipedes Hammerhead worm that eats snails We swam in a river with biting fish which was surprisingly sore just before it poured down with rain and we walked the last bit, soaking wet. Not my toes, I kept moving so they onko bit me once After lunch and a short snooze we went tubing down the river which was peaceful. Srill need to get the phot...

Two hour drive to the lodge as shown in the map below. Possible we could see Pigtail macaque (monkey), orangutan, pygmy elephants, leopard. Not that I'm expecting anything :) What an awesome drive!! Upon entering the park we saw the macaque. Notice her tiny baby Next we saw a snake eagle, then a deer, wild chicken, lovely birds. Beautiful jungle 250 year old tree I felt my arm was sore... Eek something must have bitten me. And then..... Our first pygmy elephant We were so lucky with our driver as he was a great spotter. As we arrived at the lodge, an orangutan, known as Son, was in the tree.  Wow. One of Roy's pictures We were welcomed with cool towels,...
