Fri 2 Oct Homestay in Sukau
Woke as it getting light, then drifted back to sleep. My alarm from the previous day went off at 5:40 and everyone else was already awake.
We had coffee and pancakes while watching the macaques and monkeys wake up and start playing.
We went further down the river hoping to see an orangutan crossing the bridge made for them, but instead we found a sleeping lemur in a tree. It's apparently not a lemur but looks just like one.
I'm not sure if I've turned into a bit of a girl, or if anyone would have been grossed out.
I was reminded of a book a read about a Westerner who ended up in an Indonesian jail. The toilet scene in particular, which included excrement, cockroaches and rats. It wasn't a nice book. Neither was the inside of the cave...
but from not looking up lest you got pooped on, trying not to slip on the bat poop, avoiding crunching a cockroach, to sidestepping rats, it was quite unpleasant.
Was nice to get back to the homestay and cold beer which I'd cleverly reminded to put in the fridge.
We had a long afternoon boat trip, arriving back as it got dark.

We hired a car and driver to take us to Gomantong Cave. We passed a part monitor lizard crossing the road, of course all palm oil trees on the route until we turned off about 10 minutes from leaving. A further 10 minutes and we reached the cave. There was a wooden walkway (thank goodness, I was wearing sandals). The cave was pretty, with birds and bats (the birds nest are harvested for soup of course).I was reminded of a book a read about a Westerner who ended up in an Indonesian jail. Raymond checking the invasive, hyacinth
Afternoon dinner at walked in the jungle behind the house, no leeches fortunately as it's a bit drier up the hill, but really hot.
Did I mention that your skin feels sticky most the time and your face oily.
